YOUR PEDOMETER

You may have a few questions about the pedometer that is supplied with your registration fee, this is where you will find some more information.

STEP TO IT
People tent to over-estimate their level of activity. The Accusplit activity pedometer provides and accurate step activity reading throughout the day. With a little extra effort and planning you can be life-style healthy without a single step into the gym or onto a track (although those are also good places to be active).

You derive excellent benefits if you do concentrated, aerobic walking (3 - 4 mph/ 15 - 20 minutes per mile) in 10-minute increments three times each day. Increasing your current activity level just a little helps to improve your health when you make it part of your daily lifestyle. They key to health and quality of life is making activity part of your lifestyle in the same way brushing your teeth is an integrated activity in your healthy lifestyle.

HOW TO USE YOUR PEDOMETER

  • Wear your pedometer on your waistband, 2 - 4 inches either side of your belly button
  • Take 100 steps to check accuracy (it should register between 90 - 110 steps)
  • Wear your pedometer all day, except when bathing or swimming (it is not waterproof)
  • Take off your pedometer when you retire for the night

    HOW TO RESET YOUR PEDOMETER
Press the RESET button for 3 seconds and release (All LCDisplay segments will be ON and then OFF). Press the RESET button again to turn it ON.

WHAT IF MY PEDOMETER SEEMS INACCURATE?
For best results, clip the pedometer firmly at your waist. It should be located above the knee or on your side above the hip. It is important to insure that the case is positioned straight up and down. If the pedometer is tilted, your step count may be under-recorded because the pedometer's pendulum function is not free to swing properly.

WHAT ACTIVITIES DOES THE PEDOMETER NOT REGISTER?
Pedometers will not register some activities, so add these numbers of equivalent steps:

  • 50 steps per minute for: gentle yoga
  • 100 steps per minute for: weightlifting - light rowing - canoeing
  • 150 steps per minute for: intermediate yoga - cycling - swimming - downhill skiing - rowing
  • 175 steps per minute for: rollerblading - skateboard - BMX
  • 200 steps per minute for: high cardio yoga
  • 9 holes of golf = 8,000 steps

HOW MANY STEPS IN A KM?
The Steps Out program considers an average step to be 0.762 meters (this equals a 2.5 foot stride) Therefore, 1 kilometer = 1,320 Steps.

If you have longer legs and/or a wider gait, you will actually be making more distance than the Step Update program shows. If you have shorter legs and/or a narrower gait, you will actually be making less distance than the Step Update program shows. Either way, don't sweat the distance! The point of Steps Out is to get you walking and promote overall health. It is more important how hard and long you work, not how far you go.

    VERSIONS OF THE PEDOMETER
The Penticton Steps Out program committee does research and source out different pedometer suppliers, to ensure the program acquires the most accurate and current technology. So your walking partner may have a different pedometer if you signed up at different times.
