Follow in the footsteps of Catherine Schubert. The first European woman to walk with the Overlanders with her small children to enter BC from the east. Walk the Walk to better health using our new walking program.
The Schuberts are famous Canadian pioneers. In an era when most exploration was done by men, the Schuberts traveled as a family. They were part of the Overlanders, the first settlers to travel from Fort Garry, (now Winnipeg), to the B.C. goldfields by land. By the time they landed at Fort Kamloops on Oct. l3, l862, Catherine and Francis Augustus Schubert, with their three small children, had traveled across the continent by Red River cart, horseback, river raft and foot. On Oct. l4th, the day after their arrival, Mrs. Schubert gave birth to a daughter, Rose, in a tent hastily erected in four inches of snow.
The Schuberts eventually settled in the Armstrong / Spallumcheen area of the North Okanagan and raised their family here. Because the efforts of these pioneers are well-respected in Armstrong and Spallumcheen, the Armstrong / Spallumcheen Active Community Committee has chosen to use the Overlanders theme to encourage people to get active or stay active by participating in our walking program "Overlander Walk the Walk".
Our walking program is open to everyone, regardless of where you live. To participate, register a profile for yourself by using the login feature located on this page, and then record the number of steps you walk throughout the next several months on the login page. The login page has a map of the walk, with a distance table, and specific information about your walking statistics that will be continually updated for you as you record more steps. The red line on the map shows your individual progress as you Walk the Walk of the Overlanders across western Canada. We are hoping that Armstrong/Spallumcheen Active Communities will complete the walk of the Overlanders by July 2008, when we are planning a community celebration in the park by the memorial to Catherine Schubert.
