WELCOME TO ACTIVE COMMUNITIES WEST KELOWNA

The Active Communities Initiative supports communities to increase physical activity levels of British Columbians by 20% by the year 2010.  The Active Communities Initiative is part of a much larger wellness initiative called Act Now BC which is aimed at promoting healthy lifestyle choices and environments.  As a member of the Active Communities Initiative, West Kelowna Parks and Recreation has taken up the challenge to increase physical activity levels of West Kelowna residents by creating additional opportunities for participation in physical activity.

 
Here are some of the Active Community Programs Offered in West Kelowna this Fall.
 
INDOOR WALKING CLUB BEGINNERS
Turn a simple walk around the block into an efficient, effective, aerobic, total body workout! By adding poles you will strengthen and tone your whole body, burn up to 48% more calories, increase your cardio, naturally correct body posture, and lessen impact on lower joints. Come give some poles a try and learn how fun and easy it can be in one of the weekly clinics. Clinics are held each week or just join up with the group for a great morning walk.

INDOOR WALKING CLUB ADVANCED

The advanced class is for pole walkers who want to take their fitness to the next level.  In this class you will focus on progressing to more challenging workouts using fast pace walking, aerobic interval training on stairs, and outdoor pole walking on graded and flat surfaces.

The advanced class is held on Wednesdays however, there is also time scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays for advanced pole walkers to walk on their own.

POLE WALKING CLINICS

Dates: Tuesdays after the Beginner Walking Club at 9:45am
Cost: Free
Location: Royal LePage Place Concourse
 
HIKING THE OKANAGAN VALLEY WITH STEPS OUT
Instructor: Cathy Marks
Prepare for steep, rocky terrain with the reward of breathtaking views of Okanagan Lake.
This hike is rated as difficult and will take approximately 2 and a half hours.
Date: Sun. Sept. 13     starting at 10:00 am
Cost: Free
Location: Mount Boucherie; meet at Eain Lamont Park (Lakeview Cove Rd)
